Approached in a hostel – two days later on a road trip through Kazakhstan

I arrived alone at a hostel in Almaty. Less than two minutes later someone started talking to me – and the next day four of us were sitting in a rental car and simply drove off.

What came of it: Charyn Canyon, a night under the open sky away from the day trippers, a road trip to the Chinese border, a night in a place we hadn't booked anywhere. A few days later we went to Altyn-Emel National Park – with a tent and a hike.

Of all the encounters on this trip, this was the one I had expected least.
